I think if you are new to getting into cycling, it's always a tough sport to get into. But if you are on the curvier side it's also that bit harder but then if you are also female then it can feel extremely daunting. I was literally new to the sport, 100kg and really struggled to ride 10km. And then it makes you feel like you don't really fit in. But wanted to share my experience if you are fee...

My favorite bit of elitism is "real cyclists" hating on hybrid bikes, but effusively lavishing praise on their gravel bikes. But I bike commuted in Seattle, and that's wild traffic on serious hills. My rim brakes (gasp!) worked great and I could actually see traffic around me. And in cycling groups, yeah, it gets bad with physical size comparison. Definitely worse for women, but wow is cycling all about being super slender and light! And I use a lot of my very breathable, wicking hiking clothes and it's super comfortable. But I'm not doing races. The "full kit" needs to shift to being for races, not casual group rides.

I have only just started cycling and absolutely stacked it going through a little village, chain had become wedged in between the cassette and the spokes and my knee was absolutely pissing with blood all down my leg, got rode past by 2 groups as I was at the side trying to pull my chain out and get it back on the cassette :( really nice to see you stop and see if that guy needed a hand! I have also felt like I don't fit in because I don't have clipped in shoes, just regular pedals and a pair of vans/converse, it does feel very clique!

I'm also on the heavy side with a bit of a tummy sticking out. Cycling jerseys just don't cut it for me.... So instead I follow a UA-camr/Twitch cycling streamer style, robcdee. He goes cycling around Tokyo in basically like loose Tees and pants with velosamba clipless shoes and he look so comfortable and relaxed zooming around the city in that. You don't have to invest so much in the cycling apparel (except the shoes), your everyday clothes work fine. You don't look out of place and psychological, that makes you more comfortable with yourself and enjoy what you want to do.. And for me it is to just simply cycle around.

I go for a 60 km ride four times a week. In jeans and a t shirt and a regular bike. There is no need to use lycra clothing and sit on a racebike. Makes no sense at all. It's about getting/staying fit. I weigh 210 lbs and my bike weighs 34 lbs. My speed on flat roads is always between 25 and 28 kmh.If I would get a 18 lbs racebike my speed probably would be 6 kmh higher. But that wouldn't mean I would get any fitter.

I'm an outlier in everything I do (including bicycle riding). Unfortunately, I find that (especially over 40) that people are either a zero or a 10. The middle crowd is quite thinly populated (the middle people were probably zeros that were faking it when they were younger). I've pretty much decided that I'm on my own from here (at 61). Everyone I know works less than I do, exercises less than I do and studies less than I do. It's like I'm surrounded by death.

Gear changes out of the saddle. Practice! Both up and down. You will know when you really crunch those gears, with a powered up pedal stroke! Slight weight reduction on the pedal helps Secondly. You quickly go into anaerobic oxygen debt. You will also know! It does get easier. And well worth while, having this technique mastered.

I always find indoor cycling a lot more difficult than outside. I struggle up climbs I can do outside (I have recorded some of my favourites) and sweat buckets. I have cooling fans pointed at me and have tried calibrating the bike several times but I just find it tougher. You are right about the wind this year, it’s been irritating in the UK. Very few calm days.

Yea same here, I never draft closer than 3/5 meter behind a stranger, not closer than 3 meter from who I do know. Read somewhere that when you on the back tire of the biker in front of you you save up 35-40% of energy from the wind. But that is still a 20%+ even when you can fit 2 bikes in-between you and the bike in front of you. I'm not sure what the facts are about this but you do notice it clearly when you drafting with you mountain bike behind a racer. Them 40km/h feel for me more like 30/35 which I can hold with no problem, but no drafting and 40 is slowly draining all energy.

Hi Katie, yes I totally agree about the absurd amounts of cash people feel they have to spend just to even get started ! My first serious bike was in 1992 from Coast Cycles in Liverpool, a Peugeot Electra (lovely purple paint job with a Jackson Pollox style multi-colour spatter effect), 52/42 x 7, 501 Reynolds (ie, cheapest Reynolds) tubing, down tube shifters Shimano Biopace get, in other words ENTRY LEVEL BIKE ! I used that for many, many 70-100 mile rides into Wales, Lancs, L, pool to Leeds in a day, West Coast of Scotland, Isle of Skye, Yorks Dales etc, etc (not to mention twice weekly bread and butter fitness rides out of L, pool) . . I had it for 12 years and ironically, it gave me the least hassle of virtually any bike I've owned ! I now have a SPA ELAN TI bike which is a fantastic DREAM bike . . WOW ! However, it was the Peugeot that got me " out there " and rolling and the Spa is only the 3rd Rd, Gravel, Tourer type bike I've ever owned in 32 yrs of cycling . . I just don't get this Bike Lust thing . . get a good enough bike, save your money for trips . . And Ride !

It is very double, I mean the guy at the bottom of the climb was just shy and tried to make a conversation. While the other guy should have never touched you, he wouldn't do that with hes friends either. (if he did he would get a smack in the face) But both come from good intentions but turn out terrible... It are those situations that you can understand but don't agree with.

Awesome video! 👍👍👍 I am a big size cyclist too. I stopped cycling for 10 years plus, recently just picked it up again. I am around 85kg now, and 5 feet 6, honestly, I gain a lot of weight in these few years, maybe because of age catching up, especially in the last two years during the pandemic. I just don't care whether to be able to fit in or not. I just ordered some 2XL jersey, coz I can't fit in all my old jersey anymore! 😂 I don't care what others say, like I told my wife, I don't even care whether I'll loose weight or not, I just want to train back to have stronger legs, stronger heart, and stronger lungs.
